Although there’s no denying the description of the year 2017 as a nerve-racking one, it’s been a year that recorded very remarkable successes in the face of multiple constraints for our sector by dint of hard work, commitment and dedication of our Minister, Deputy Ministers, Management and the entire staff of the sector.

In spite of the creativity and innovative activities emanating from our tertiary research institutions, none of the institutions has taken advantage of the system to secure a patent for an invention through the Ghana Industrial Property Office, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice has bemoaned.

Gloria Akuffo has consequently urged all tertiary institutions to create visibility for their innovative activities through protection and exploitation, stressing “research works gathering dust on shelves should be a thing of the past. Let your innovation improve lives.”

DECRIMINALIZING ATTEMPTED SUICIDE FROM OUR STATUTE BOOKS

If media reports in recent time are anything worthy of attention then one could say without any scintilla of doubt that suicide is commonplace in Ghana.

For instance while the “Daily Graphic” of September 15, 2015 reported that Ghana records 1,500 suicide cases annually as a result of depression , the phenomenon – on Ghanaian University campuses -  made the most alarming headlines in the first quarter of this year.

NEW BOARDS UNDER THE AG’S DEPARTMENT INAUGURATED

In order to ensure effective and efficient delivery of legal services, the governing boards of four Agencies under the Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice – General Legal Council, Law Reform Commission, Legal Aid Scheme and Council for Law Reporting - have been duly inaugurated in Accra.

Gloria Akuffo, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice in her remarks urged members of the boards to work on inadequacies within the sector particularly those pertaining to under staffing and backlog of remunerations.
